Course DescriptionMt Disappointment Course Description for 2012 Parking will be at the Mt. Wilson parking lot. The start will be in the parking lot and then proceed down Mt. Wilson Road to Eaton Saddle. All runners will follow dirt road through the old Mueller Tunnel to Markum Saddle, where they will be surrounded by a 360° panoramic view of 7 peaks, which include Occidental Peak, Mt. Lowe, Muir Peak, Brown Mountain, Mt. Markham, San Gabriel Peak, and of course, Mt. Disappointment. From Markham Saddle, runners will take the trail up to Mt. Disappointment going past San Gabriel Peak (6000 ft) and continue on the Mt. Disappointment Trail down to the Red Box Aid Station #1 (mile 5.7). Red Box Aid Station is crewed by volunteers from Sierra Madre’s Mt Wilson Trail Race. Runners leave Red Box Aid Station on the tree-covered Red Box Fire Road all the way to the West Fork Aid Station (mile 10.7). Runners leave Westfork on Red Box Fire Road and climb up to the Newcomb Aid Station (mile 14.5). This aid station is where the hill ends and the road widens. This is the same location as the AC 100 Newcomb Aid Station. The Aid Station is manned by Sierra Madre’s Team Cross-Fit. Runners leave Newcomb Saddle on Red Box Road, follow the road to the “T” intersection of Rincon-Edison Road, and turn left to follow Rincon-Edison Road towards Shortcut. The course goes down to the San Gabriel River (the lowest elevation on the entire course) and then climbs to Shortcut. Two miles below Shortcut is our “Clif-Bar” Rincon-Edison Road aid station set-up as an added safety station (mile 21.7). Runners have drop bags and crew access at Shortcut (mile 23.7). Runners do NOT cross HWY #2. Foothill Flyers Running Club crews up Shortcut. Runners will leave thru the Forest gate on the Fire road, but turn right approximately 0.5 miles on to the historic Silver Moccasin trail. Runners will follow Silver Moccasin back to Westfork (mile 27.7). All along this Shortcut Loop, The Sierra Madre Search and Rescue have lent their support and emergency help. Upon leaving Westfork, all 50K runners take the Gabrielino Trail going west to the base of the Kenyon Devore Trail. The final climb, which offers spectacular views, ascends the Kenyon Devore Trail (1910 ft in 3.1 miles) up to the Mt. Wilson Summit Finish (33.0 miles total). The course has approximately 6235 feet of elevation gain and loss, the course is completely within the Angeles National Forest.
